Starting BJJ at an older age comes with its own set of challenges

As you start training jiu jitsu, you may have a few nagging doubts about whether it’s really meant for people your age. After all, the first thing that comes to mind when we think of BJJ is the young and fit athletes who seem to be able to do things that no one else can do. The truth is that starting BJJ at an older age comes with its own set of challenges. You may not have the same flexibility or strength as you did when younger, but this doesn’t mean that learning how to defend yourself in real-life situations isn’t something worth pursuing.

Immovable body misconception

One of the most common misconceptions is that once you are over 40 and don’t train, your body will be 100% unfit and immoveable if you start training. This is not true at all. The body is capable of amazing things! It can adapt to new demands, recover from injuries, learn new skills and get stronger and faster. You can train at any age, with any level of fitness, or ability.

So, if you’re over 40, what does all this mean for you?

There are lots of opportunities for over 40 year olds to get started in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If you’re interested, there are many benefits to starting at an older age:

  • It can be a good way to stay fit and healthy by engaging in an activity that combines physical training, flexibility, endurance and balance.
  • You will build confidence by learning new skills while interacting with other students who share your passion as well as your interest in keeping fit.
  • It’s really, really fun.
  • BJJ requires physical training as well as mental training -which can help lower stress levels and decrease anxiety levels.
  • It’s also a great way to meet new people!
