Professor Craig “Sav” Roberts

Professor Craig Roberts is the owner and head coach of Gracie Botany — but you can call him Sav.

Sav has an extensive resume of excellence in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. He’s been training for 18 years, has been teaching for 10 years, and has been a black belt for 3 years. During that time, Sav has won numerous competitions and taught innumerable students.

Sav began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Bruno Panno in 2003 at the Maroubra Surf Club. What began as an interest turned into an obsession. Within a year Sav won a nationwide tournament to become Australian Champion.

With the scene in Australia then so young, Sav travelled to Brazil to learn the gentle art from its masters. Sav learned from BJJ’s legends, including Royler and Rickson Gracie, as well as BJJ co-creator Helio Gracie.

From there Sav established himself as a fearsome Jiu-Jitsu competitor.  Sav has won 8 gold medals at the national Pan Pacific Championships, was a finalist in the World Jiu Jitsu Championships in Rio as a purple belt, and silver medalled as a brown belt at the World Jiu Jitsu Championships in LA.

Since retiring from competition, Sav has dedicated his BJJ efforts into imparting his wisdom onto the next generation. After co-owning his own academy in the city, Sav became a full-time teacher at Gracie Humaita Sydney Headquarters.

He’s spent the past few years leading Gracie Sydney’s fundamentals program, and introduced Parent-Children classes to the school. With a widely recognized skillset, Sav has been teaching at academies across Sydney too. That includes Gracie Parramatta and Gracie Artamon.

As a seasoned competitor and coach, there’s no one better to start your BJJ journey with.
